Bob Kunz Update: Day 31 - Post 1

E-Mail update from Melany:

Good morning,

Pops is doing amazing at the rehab center!

He has therapy 3-5 hours a day.

He looks at his schedule every night so that he knows what his next day will look like. They post the next days therapy schedule every night about 8 or 8:30.

If we take him for a walk in his wheel chair around the hospital he is always asking what time it is so he doesn't miss his therapy sessions.

He is very aware of time.

Continue to pray for his bladder and kidneys. He is still having problems with those.

He is very determined to do everything his therapists tell him to do.

He knows that the sooner he learns what they want him to the sooner he can be released.

Thanks again for all of the support and prayers!

Bob Kunz Update: Day 28 - Post 1

E-Mail Update from Melany:

Yesterday was a long day for pops.

I think it was more mentally draining than anything.
He had evaluations with the speach therapist, the physical therapist and the occupational therapist.

He is needing prayers now for the function of his bladder and kidneys. What ever is suppose to trigger the sensor in the brain to go to the bathroom is not happening. His bladder is not draining and is causing problems with the kidneys.

My mom was able to take him for some walks around the inside of the building and outside on the patio. He was in his wheel chair but enjoyed getting out of his room.

By about 7:00pm he was ready to go to bed.

Bob Kunz Update: Day 27 - Post 2

E-mail post from Melany:

Wednesday was a long day for pops.

They got him transfered to the Rehab Hospital which is down in Honolulu. He got settled in his room.

They had him sit up from the bed by himself and then stand up with the walker. He walked about 20ft by himself with the walker.

By 7:45pm he was asking if he could go to sleep.

Today will be a long day for him. His therapy starts at 8:30am and goes until 10:00am then he gets a break until 2:00. He then does therapy from 2:00 until 4:30.

It will be his first day of being up and around for so long.

Melany

Bob Kunz Update: Day 27 - Post 1

Tammy spoke with Rose last night and Bob did get moved to the Kaiser Rehabilitation Center!

He should be there for two or three weeks and then, if all goes well, he may be transferred to outpatient rehab.

That means he would stay at Melany's and he would have someone come and do rehab in-home 3 or 4 times a week.

He continues to progress at an amazing rate at least physically. Everyday he is getting better and better!

His mental progress is still a challenge. He has good days and challenging days where he has a hard time remembering things.

Rose said that yesterday he couldn't remember her name and when he was told it was "Rose" he replied, "Oh boy, now I'm in the doghouse!"

Thank you so much for your prayers and support!

We were able to cover the cost of transportation from the hospital to the rehabilitation center thanks to your gifts!

Bob Kunz Update: Day 26 - Post 1

E-Mail update from Melany:

Good Morning!

Dad is progressing extremely well.

The nurses and therapists are amazed...they are saying that what he is accomplishing in one day most stroke patients take one to two weeks to accomplish.

He was up yesterday walking the hall with the aide of a walker. It was slow going but a miracle that he is up and walking some.

He is being transferred this afternoon to the rehab center. This is where the intense therapy begins.

Please be praying for strength and endurance these next few weeks!

Bob Kunz Update: Day 23 - Post 2

Bob is in a room with his own phone now and if you would like to give him a call that would be great!

Please remember that we are 3 hours ahead of Hawaii and to keep the phone converstaions short in length and upbeat.

The phone number for the Hawaii Medical Center West is:

1-808-678-7000

Bob is in Room 415.

Our God is an awesome God!

Tim

Bob Kunz Update: Day 23 - Post 1

Hi Everybody!
Today Bob walked with a walker!
He has been playing checkers with Dante, Blackjack with the nurses and also dominoes!
He is really improving!

Praise God! He's doing better everyday!

Thank you for your prayers and support!
You are making the difference!

Bob Kunz Update: Day 21 - Post 1

I got a call from Tammy and the kids last night while I was working to tell me that they talked with Bob on the phone!

They all said that he sounded great!

Tammy said that the difference from Wednesday when she saw him last and the phone conversation was incredible!

Bob told them that he had stood up in physical therapy!

On Wednesday, Bob had been practicing printing his name so that a Notary Public could witness him signing his income tax return, and he was struggling.

When the Notary Public got there, Bob was given the tax return to sign and he signed it immediately with his actual signature!

The family compared it to the signature from last years return and it was a match!

God is so good!

Thank you for your prayers! They're working!

Bob Kunz Update: Day 20 - Post 2

E-mail Update from Melany:

Wow...it is amazing to see our God in action!

Yesterday they moved my dad up to the 4th floor. They moved him to this floor because he is getting more stabilized each day.

He had a great day yesterday and was able to be in the wheel chair for a few hours. They are hoping to get him into the wheelchair 2x today.

He was exhausted and ready to sleep by about 8pm.

They gave him a respitory treatment before he went to bed because he was still wheezing last night.

Melany

Bob Kunz Update: Day 20 - Post 1

Hello All,

Yesterday was a fairly good day for Bob.

Bob got to be in a wheel chair and go for a pleasure cruise outside his room yesterday for the first time!

The medical staff did an ultrasound yesterday and determined that Bob needs to go to the bathroom more! His bladder is very full, which is backing up into his kidneys.
The fluid is eventually backing up to his lungs which is causing the pneumonia he is experiencing.
I got some great news from Pat today! Melany's Jeep has been delivered to the shipping company! It should ship out this weekend and be available for pick up on April 4th!

Thank you again to everyone who gave to help make this possible! The vehicle will allow greater mobility for Rose and other family and friends who are visiting. It will also allow Melany to work!
Many of you have expressed a desire or even a commitment to give to help Bob and family. Any money that is received, over and above the cost of shipping the Jeep, will be used to buy gas cards to fuel the Jeep.

Bob Kunz Update: Day 19 - Post 1

Hi All,

I spoke with Tammy last night and she told me that Bob had a pretty good day.

The pneumonia seemed to be much better on Tuesday.

A CT Scan was performed on Monday and the results were very good. The blood has dissipated much more than the medical staff had expected!

They are now doing Physical Therapy twice a day.

Bob was alert and seemed to be doing well.

Laura has come down with the flu or whatever bug the rest of the Hawaiian clan has been dealing with for the last couple of weeks.

Bob Jr got in on Monday night. Tammy and Laura fly home this afternoon (Wednesday).

Thank you for your prayers and support!

Bob Kunz Update: Day 17 - Post 2

Hi All,

I just got off of the phone with Tammy and wanted to post this while it was still fresh in my mind.

Today Bob's blood pressure was all over the map. High, low and everywhere in between.

They are still trying different medication combinations to stablize his BP, but its not easy.

Bob has also come down with a touch of pneumonia.

Please pray that the medical staff is able to find the right combination of medications to stablize his BP and also that his lungs are healed of the pneumonia.

Please also pray for Rose who also has good days and challenging days.

Thank you for all that you are doing.

Tim

Bob Kunz Update: Day 17 - Post 1

Hi All,

Bob had a pretty good weekend! His body seems to be responding to a more normal blood pressure.

The medical staff even had to back off some of his Blood Pressure meds on Sunday because his BP got too low!

He is talking more and his sense of humor is alive and well!

The family slept in on Saturday and didn't get up to the hospital until around noon and Bob wasn't so happy about that.

When it was time to say goodnight that evening, one of the girls said "See you tomorrow" and Bob said "In the morning!"

Thank you again for your prayers, and support!

Bob Kunz Update: Day 14 - Post 2

Great news!! Dr. Hooda, worked with Dad today and said that he thought Dad might be ready to be transferred to an Acute Rehabilitation Facility! He has made a lot of progress in the last 4 days since his blood pressure came down.

A few days ago the medical staff was predicting 4 months in the hospital!

God is good!

Please pray that he gets transferred to a good facility!

Thank you again for your love, prayers and support!

Bob Kunz Update: Day 14 - Post 1

E-Mail Update from Melany:

I can't believe how quick time goes by...my dad has now been in the hospital for 2 weeks.

Yesterday was a pretty good day.

Some people have asked....what do you mean by a good day versus a bad day.

A bad day is when he is not really responding to anything or anybody. He just mumbles and he is very agitated...tossing his left arm around and fidgeting with everything like he is in a lot of pain.

A good day is when he is alert and he tries to talk and answer questions. He opens his eyes and acknowledges that we are there.

He did physical therapy again and moved his right arm a little tiny bit.

We bought him some toys for him to play with. We got him to throw a nerf ball. We got some big duplo legos and a few other toys to help his mind.

My brothers Pat and Jeff went home on Wednesday and my two sisters Tammy and Laura both came in on Wednesday.

This helps to have people staying in the room with my dad.

Bob Kunz Update: Day 13 - Post 1

E-Mail Update from Melany:

Well Wednesday was about the same as Tuesday....the days just seem to run together.

My dad was able to do his physical therapy again. He must have remembered the physical therapist because when she came he started checking her coat pocket again to see what she had...I think he was looking for the pager. He sat on the edge of the bed for about 15 minutes...with help of course.

They are still trying new blood pressure medicines to try and get his blood pressure stabilized.

My Aunt Kathy...my mom's sister flew in yesterday.

I am very grateful because I think my mom needed the support....they are very close.

She gets to stay with us fr a whole month!

Love you all!

Melany

PS: Laura and Tammy flew in last night too and will be in Hawaii until next Wednesday.

Bob Kunz Update: Day 12 - Post 2

An E-Mail Update from Melany:

Good Morning,
Tuesday his blood pressure was low enough that they were able to do physical therapy for the 2nd day in a row.

His physical therapy consists of sitting on the side of the bed for about 15 minutes. He is like a 10 month old baby trying to sit up because he does not have great muscle control.

He kept teasing the physical therapist....he would feel her arms, try to take the stuff out of her shirt pocket. He finally succeeded and got her pager. She told him to give her pager back so he put it under his butt so she couldn't get it. She told him to give it back again and he looked at her like a 2 year old that knows they did something wrong and finally gave her pager back.

He is really struggling now with trying to feed himself...he goes very slow and is messy...but at least he is still trying.

I know my dad is a fighter and won't give up!

Melany

Bob Kunz Update: Day 12 - Post 1

Sorry about not posting yesterday.

The medical staff was able to get Bob's blood pressure down both Monday and Tuesday so they were able to have him do some physical therapy.

When Melany came to see Bob yesterday afternoon, he said "Hi Sweety", which is the most he's said in days!

Bob's care has improved some reluctantly and we are still waiting on a bed to open up at the Kaiser Hospital.

Thank you to everyone who responded to the 'Opportunity to Help' that I posted Monday night.

We have raised a little over $500 so far.

This request for help has opened our eyes to the future need for opportunities to help.

Also a big thank you to everyone who has posted encouraging messages in the 'Guestbook'.

It means a lot to the family!

Tammy and Laura are headed to Hawaii this afternoon.

Thank you for your love, support and prayers!

An Opportunity to Help:

Hello All ~

I know that several people have been asking if there is anything they could do to help out so I am throwing this out to see who might be able to help. If you can’t that is fine too.

We are trying to get my dad moved to a different hospital (we are trying to move him to Kaiser Hospital). He is with Group Health in Washington and they partner with Kaiser Medical out here in Hawaii. We have not been very happy with his care at the hospital he is in right now. The doctors have been good but the day to day nursing care has been a bit to be desired.

Anyways….Jeff and I were talking about trying to get one of my parent’s cars shipped out here so that my mom would have a little more freedom plus once we get my dad moved into Kaiser the drive is about 35 miles from my house. It is close to my work so if we don’t get a car we can work things out. Currently I am going into work late everyday (believe me I am not complaining because I would do whatever it takes for my dad) so that I can get my mom and whoever is staying at my house at the time dropped off at the hospital. My mom can’t leave the hospital until I get off work and back up to the hospital.

It will cost about $1050 to get a car shipped over here. We had talked about renting one but by the time several months go by it would be cheaper to ship one. I still have a car just sitting over at my brother Pat’s house in Everett. We thought if we could ship that one over than we would not have to pay to ship one back when they do return to Washington. I am paying insurance on my car now so it would not cost anymore a month just the money to get it here. Than my mom could use that car and be able to run errands or go get lunch or whatever.

So if anyone would be able to help out with getting a car shipped here that would be great. If not, that is fine too.

Again….I just want to thank everyone for all of the support and the prayers….we greatly appreciate it and appreciate all the family.

Aunt Janet….thanks for the jokes….I passed them along and it made everyone smile :o)

Tim….if you want to pass this along to anyone else that would be great too.

Bob Kunz Update: Day 10 - Post 1

E-Mail Update from Melany:

Well Sunday was a pretty good day.

They are still struggling to keep his blood pressure down. They changed his medication again to try another one.

He was awake a lot but still was not talking...just mumbling.

The doctor was pushing on the bottom of his right foot to see if he had any feeling there.
He didn't feel anything until he pushed on some pressure points between his toes.
He opened his eyes really wide so he knew he felt that. The doctor said that was good. He did not feel anything though when he tried pinching spots on his right hand.

The doctor was telling my mom that my dad is a very interesting case because he said that 75% of the people that suffer an acute stroke like he has and has that much blood in the brain don't even live. He said the other 25% are in a coma. They can't believe that he is awake and can respond like he is.

For that I am very thankful.

He definately has his good days and his bad days but I thank God for the little things everyday and for what he can do at this point.

Thank you all for your prayers!

Bob Kunz Update: Day 9 - Post 2

Hello everyone,

I had shared yesterday that the family in Hawaii is concerned with the level of medical care at the hospital he is in.

Jeff and a close family friend, Betty, really took the hospital staff to task and care has improved some.

Bob normally uses a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine for sleep apnea and Rose has been telling the hospital staff that he needs it to be able to sleep, but until Friday night they had resisted her requests.

With the CPAP machine, he slept much better.

The level of care has improved but the family would still like to get Bob into the Kaiser Hospital.

Thank you again for your prayers and support.

I am trying to set up a Guest Book for everyone to share their support for Bob and the family and let them know who is following his progress.

Tim

Bob Kunz Update: Day 9 - Post 1

E-mail update from Melany:

Saturday was a much better day.

He was awake most of the day and was answering questions with one word answers.

The doctors are still amazed that he is even awake.

The neuro-surgeon said that he does not want to do surgery unless it is a matter of life and death because it would be on the left side and would leave him brain damaged the rest of his life.

Melany

Bob Kunz Update: Day 8 - Post 2

Well the family in Hawaii has become disillusioned with the hospital that Bob is in now.
The level of care is substandard especially after visiting hours.

They have gotten him on a waiting list for admittance to a Kieser Hospital and he will be transferred as soon as a bed opens up.

Please pray that a bed opens up soon. His life could depend on it.

Bob Kunz Update: Day 8 - Post 1

E-Mail Update from Melany:

It was another rough day.

My dad was very agitated all day.

He was running a fever all day too.

He would not open his eyes and was just mumbling for most of the day....finally late last night he said a few words.

Bob Kunz Update: Day 7 - Post 2

E-Mail Update from Melany:

Good Morning ~

Thurday was a very rough day. We got the CAT scan back and there wasn't any additional bleeding but the blood that is there has not gone down any like they were hoping. The pressure in his head is tremendous.

The took out his catheter because he got an infection along with a urinary tract infection. He was running a fever too. They put him on some antibiotics for the infection.

He was very uncomfortable tossing his left arm all around. He still is not moving his right side.
He would not eat either.

They finally gave him some morphine for the pain and to make him more comfortable.

We are praying today will be a better day.

Melany

Bob Kunz Update: Day 7 - Post 1

I have not received an e-mail update from any of the family in Hawaii since yesterday morning, but I did speak with Sherry yesterday afternoon.

Bob has developed a urinary tract infection from his catheter. It has been very painful and aggravating.

In the afternoon the medical staff decided to administer a sedative to help him get some sleep.

I have not heard an update since then.

Hopefully Bob had a restful sleep and is doing well!

I will post more when I get new news.

Thank you again for all who are praying for Bob and the family and for your support.

Bob Kunz Update: Day 6 - Post 1

E-mail update from Melany:

Yesterday was a difficult day.

They think that he might have more bleeding in the brain.

He is not moving his right leg or arm.

They did another CAT scan. We have not heard what the result of that was.

They are talking about having to drill a hole in his head to relieve some of the pressure and possibly put a drain tube in.

He slept most of the evening and by 9:00pm was asleep for the night.

Bob Kunz Update: Day 5 - Post 3

E-mail Update from Melany:

Well today was a long day....

They have had a hard time getting his blood pressure to go down. It kept going really high today. Finally this evening his blood pressure went down to a good level. They changed his medication....I think that is what helped.

They would like to start physical therapy because of what he is already doing but because they still cannot get his blood pressure stabalized they have decided to wait.

He loves having his grandkids in the room. He opens his eyes and tries to talk when the kids are in there.

Thank you all for the prayers.

Love,

Melany

Bob Kunz Update: Day 5 - Post 2

Another E-mail from Melany:

Good morning.

They moved him onto the telemetry floor. He is in a shared room unfortunately.
He can only have 2 visitors at a time. Visiting hours are from 8:30am to 9:30pm.

They gave him morphine last night again before we left because his head was hurting really bad and the tylenol wasn't quite doing the job. I don't know if they gave him morphine this morning.....we will know in a little bit when we get up there how he is doing today.

Pat and Heidi's flight got delayed leaving Seattle by about 3 hours. They got in (I think anyways) at about 1:00am this morning. Sherry went to pick them up because they are staying at the Moce home.

I have not called this morning so they could sleep in a little....probably not though because I am sure all the girls would be way too excited to sleep.

We have to leave the hospital at 9:30pm so that is good so we can all get some rest.

Melany

Bob Kunz Update: Day 5 - Post 1

E-mail update from Melany:

Today was pretty rough.

Dad's blood pressure kept going high today. They are going to change to a different blood pressure medicine because it keeps going so high. The pressure in his head was so bad today that they had to give him morphine. The doctor said this is to be expected since it is the 4th day.

He was moved to a different floor todaybecause they needed the ICU room. Since he was out of the ICU we took the grandkids back one at a time. He really perked up seeing them. I think they are going to play a big part in his rehab.

This is going to be a long journey....he will have good days and bad days...the doctor said not to be discouraged though because he is doing better than most people with a stroke.

Good night....until tomorrow.

Bob Kunz Update: Day 4 - Post 2

Thanks Tim!

I came into work today but I am having a VERY hard time concentrating. If anyone wants to send a card or a package they can send it to:

Melany Matanibukaca
91-879 Puamaeole Street # 9D
Ewa Beach, HI 96706

I think the pressure in the head is getting to him today. They gave him some morphine today (for the first time since he has been in the hospital) because his head was hurting so bad. The doctor said that the 3rd and 4th day can be the hardest because those are the days when the pressure would be the worst. Today is the 4th day. He threw-up all over from the first dose of morphine they gave him but did a better job keeping the 2nd dose down. Jeff got in last night at about 10:00pm. I picked him up and he is staying at my house. He got to go in and see dad this morning. I wasn’t with him since I had to go into work. He was pretty bright eyed though this morning when they got there. Now that he has had some morphine they said that he is resting….feeling pretty good :o)

I will e-mail you tonight when I get up there and see him.

Love you lots!

Melany

Bob Kunz Update: Day 4 - Post 1

This came from Bob's son Jeff on Saturday:

He saw the neuro surgeon yesterday and at this point they don't think he needs surgery.
He thinks the blood will reabsorb on its own but it will take 3 to 4 months.
He ran some physical tests and he's confusing his arm movement with his leg movement.
The vessel that burst was in the center of his brain and then blood leaked into the left side.
The doctor said this is the area of the brain that processes analytical thinking, so that's where he'll be affected the most.
They are still trying to stabilize his blood pressure but it's a tricky job because bleeding could start again if they drop the blood pressure too quickly.
He'll be in ICU for an undetermined amount of time.

Take Care,
Jeffrey

Bob Kunz Update: Day 3 - Post 2

I received the following e-mail from my sister-in-law Melany:

Today was a pretty good day.
They did another CAT scan this afternoon. The doctor was worried there was blood on the outside of the brain....but the scan showed the same as the night he was admitted. The blood is still pooled in the center of the brain.
He is still his fiesty self. He was hot and I said I would get him a fan....he told me not to worry because he was getting out of this place.
He pulled out his oxygen tube today. He didn't think he needed it. His oxygen saturation is doing good so they said he could stay off the oxygen.
Their main concern is just keeping his blood pressure stabalized....which is their biggest challenge at this time.
Thank you all for your prayers. I will continue to send you all updates.
Love,
Melany

Bob Kunz Update: Day 3 - Post 1

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to start a blog to be able to update you all on the progress of one of the greatest men I know, my father-in-law, Bob Kunz.

Bob and Rose were visititing their daughters Melany and Sherry who live in Honolulu Hawaii when Bob suffered what is called a hypertension stroke in the middle of the night on February 29th 2008. His blood pressure was 190 over 118 and it caused bleeding in his brain.

He does have some brain damage and is unable to read or walk.

The doctors indicate that with all of the blood lost that he should be in a coma and they are surprised that he is even concious.

We are believing for a full recovery and ask for your prayers for both Bob and the family.

I will give you more information as I get it.

Feel free to comment or respond to this post.

Thank you for your prayers and support.
